Program Overview:
The Trent-in-Bolivia program (TiB) is a collaborative initiative between Trent University's International Development Studies department and Languages & Linguistics program. This semester-long study abroad experience in Sucre, Bolivia, in partnership with Universidad San Francisco Xavier de Chuquisaca (USFX), offers students a unique opportunity to enhance their Spanish language skills while delving into critical issues such as resource extraction, Indigenous movements, gender equality, and rights. The program takes place at the second oldest university in the Americas in a city known for its vibrant culture, rich history, stunning colonial architecture, and warm hospitality. A great place to globalize your degree.听

Before applying, it is advisable to consult with your academic advisors in the Spanish and Latin American Studies Department as well as the International Development Studies (IDS) or other departments regarding course equivalences at Dalhousie and to obtain a Letter of Permission. Students must have completed a basic level of Spanish (SPAN1021.03 and SPAN 1022.03, SPAN 1035 or equivalent) with at least a B average.听

Description of the courses:
听听听听听听听听1. IDST 3860Y: Bolivian Seminar - A module-based course covering topics such as 听听听听听听听听Indigenous social movements, Andean Indigenous jurisdiction, feminist struggles, 听听听听听听听听gender-based violence, and a case study on mining in the Potos铆 region.

听听听听听听听听2. IDST 3840H: Field Course in Community Development - This course combines 听听听听听听听听theoretical, methodological, and practical reflections on development studies with 听听听听听听听听hands-on community development experience. It involves a placement with an 听听听听听听听听organization or community addressing social and economic issues.

听听听听听听听听3. SPAN 2500Y: Intermediate Spanish - An intensive course in oral and written 听听听听听听听听Spanish, with a focus on conversational skills relevant to the Bolivian context.听
听听听听听听听The Spanish and Latin American Department of Dalhousie will grant the equivalence 听听听听听听 听of 6 credits of Intermediate Spanish. Equivalences include Span 2021 and Span 2022,听 听 听 听 听 Span 2035, or a combination of Span 2021 and 2005 or 2022 and 2005.
Upon return, students are encouraged to continue their studies in Spanish and pursue a Minor.
